GUREZ (TANGDHAR): Residents of Gurez whose houses were destroyed by the earthquake on October 8, 2006, are still waiting for the government to release relief funds. Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad visited this border area on Tuesday to inquire into the matter.
Mohammad Younis Bhat, a 60-year-old resident of Tangdhar, has not received even the first instalment of Rs 40,000 out of the Rs 1 lakh compensation announced by the state government after the quake.

"I handed over the application to the CM on Tuesday and he issued orders to the tehsildar concerned and sub-divisional magistrate for immediate release of the funds but nothing was done," Bhat said.
Bhat, his wife and two children have been living in a tin shed since October 8.
"The police did not allow us to meet the chief minister on Tuesday to convey our woes," said Dileep Singh, head of two Sikh villages at Tarboni, which is 3 km away from Tangdhar and had suffered extensive damage in the quake.
The residents still live in tin sheds built with the help of the state government. The state authorities had released Rs 30,000 for the construction of the sheds as a short-term relief measure.
"Azad's directions were not followed by tehsildar Mohammad Rafiq. On Tuesday, the CM had instructed him to release 2,000 cheques of the second instalment to the victims," said Mohammad Maqsood, a Tangdhar resident.

The tehsildar said he had to conduct a fresh survey before releasing the cheques. According to the CM, Rs 427 crore has been released to the affected people so far.
Of this, Rs 434 crore was received from the Central government. The state government had also sent a proposal for Rs 877 crore to the Centre.
Out of this, Rs 379 crore was marked for creation of public infrastructure and Rs 498 crore for construction of houses.
The Prime Minister's Office sanctioned Rs 5 lakh each to the 20 children who were orphaned and Rs 2.50 lakh each to the 389 children who lost one parent in the quake. An officer from the PMO visited the Valley last month to grant approval for the funds.
